| Who's Fooling Who? The Fear of Missing a Real Opportunity |
Warning, warning! Over Worked and Under Educated Business Owners... I sat at my desk for 20 minutes trying to think of a Positive way to write this. You can’t…. you won’t…. don’t… watch out for… etc. etc., this type of rhetoric is just not popular! Here is the twist. You, the business owner, are not going out of your mind! When it sounds too good to be true, IT IS! Everyone is talking smack. The Broker cry’s “I have a buyer for your business,” “You must know the value of your company!,” “With the right marketing plan…,” and “Hire me to help you grow through Acquisition.” The retiring Owner says, “Bring me a Buyer… There is no work to do!” And the growth oriented Owner says, “Just bring me a deal, I’m a buyer.” “I’ll know it when I see it.” “What else do you have?” Even I get the 6 to 10 letters, calls and e-mails per month telling of the perfect buyer that would like to buy my business…. The synergistic buyer that has to have it!... The special stimulus money that doubles the value of your business and is only available through the end of the year so HURRY! Talk about spaghetti throwing! Transactions don’t happen this way. A little thought and planning goes a long way and with me to screen those calls for you, you won’t miss the Real Deal! For those of you that are unfamiliar with this term, spaghetti throwing, it is the act of throwing Spaghetti (or &#$!) at the wall to see if any will stick. The probability is not very good. Solution: Give them my direct number. When they call, brush them off to me and I will qualify them for you. Just say, “Great, I am very interested to learn more. May I offer you my intermediaries name and phone number? Rick Dillon at 913-322-0054. He knows exactly what will fit our company.” Caution though, don’t do this until you give me some basics of where you are in your business life cycle.
